The public, whom Parliament represent, has no way of knowing whether the committee was fair, lenient or harsh on EFF MP Floyd Shivambu, writes Mpumelelo Mkhabela.

Parliament is the most important institution South Africans must look to when things go wrong in public affairs. This institution represents – or should represent – the hopes of the people. 

The idea that "the people shall govern" should find adequate expression in how the legislature executes its tasks, makes laws, and holds the executive and other organs of state to account.
