On 29 May, voters will head to the polls to make their mark in the country's general elections.
This year is regarded as a milestone election as it coincides with South Africa's celebration of 30 years of democracy.
It could also see the ANC lose its majority after being at the helm for three decades, which means the country could see a national coalition government for the first time.
Much has been said about the significance of year's vote and why voter turnout is a crucial factor. In 1994, 86.6% of registered voters made their mark. In the last national elections in 2019, voter turnout had declined to 66.1%.

If the recent municipal election figures are anything to go by, there is huge cause for concern for the upcoming elections. The 2021 voter turnout was only 45.86%. If this trend continues, there will be fewer people actively involved in shaping democracy in South Africa.
