In a country in which populist politicians increasingly beat the xenophobic drums of hate and fear, there are also those who sing of peace and togetherness. Bertha Chiguvare is one such person in the province of Limpopo, where xenophobia is rife, writes Jan Gerber

In November 2022, about 300 people in the Mashamba tribal authority in Limpopo were ready to move door-to-door to remove migrants from their homes.

"When we went to the police station, the police told us: 'We are scared, we can't go now, the situation is too tense'. And yet, people were ready to move door-to-door to evict non-nationals," said Bertha Chiguvare, the Kagisano programme coordinator in Limpopo.
