  • Miley Cyrus is living a new "sober lifestyle".
  • The Slide Away singer said after looking into her family history and finding mental health issues and addiction she knew she needed to make a change.
  • The 27-year-old said there's this idea that being sober when you're young means you're "no fun", but she didn't want to continue waking up in the morning "feeling groggy".

Miley Cyrus recently spoke on the Variety and iHeart podcast The Big Ticket, where she revealed her new "sober lifestyle" is what prepared her for "the stillness and the quietness" we’re currently experiencing.

The Slide Away singer said she’s actually been sober for the past six months, and what started out as a way of recovering from vocal cord surgery in December has become a new way of life for her, that has also helped her focus on her craft.

"I had been thinking a lot about my mother," she added. "My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable. My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad raised himself. I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, 'Why am I the way that I am?' By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly."

The 27-year-old went on to say she doesn’t want to wake up "feeling groggy" every day.

"It’s really hard because especially being young, there’s that stigma of 'You’re no fun'. It’s like, 'Honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.'

"The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time. I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready."

While in quarantine the singer has been keeping herself busy with her Instagram series Bright Minded. So far she’s spoken to fellow Disney alums Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, as well as Kerry Washington and Elton John.
