  • Renewing your car licence can be a tedious task, but it no longer has to be.
  • But this has been the case for several years with banks, grocery stores and many companies offering vehicle licence renewal services to help motorists make their lives easier.
  • More and more companies are offering reduced prices for car licence renewals, and FNB is the latest to join the bandwagon.

Hot on the heels of Shoprite and Checkers' discounted vehicle licence renewal service price drop, FNB has joined the bandwagon and thrown in a bigger saving when using the bank's app.

Earlier in October, Shoprite and Checkers announced a R40 discount on car licence renewals when using their online service or in-store Money Market.

This brings the price down from the regular price of R225 to R185. FNB has now dropped its service price to just R99, including delivery.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) had warned South African motorists more than one million vehicle licences would expire at the end of September.

And, considering the time of year with financial constraints, most of those expired vehicle licences have not yet been renewed.

FNB launched its vehicle licence renewal service on its app in June 2017, costing users a R199 handling and service fee.

According to the bank, customers can now renew their vehicle licence discs for a service fee of just R99, inclusive of delivery.

And, when renewing multiple vehicle licence discs, customers will only pay an extra R49 service fee for each additional vehicle being renewed in the same basket.

What's more, says FNB, customers can now also pay for their licence renewal using their eBucks.

The car licence renewal service is offered in collaboration with the RTMC and Road Protect, and there is also no paperwork.

To renew a vehicle licence disc through the FNB app, simply use your smart device to scan your vehicle license disc and complete the renewal process with secure in-app payment.

Jolandé Duvenage, nav chief imagineer at FNB, says: "We are excited to make it even more convenient and affordable to maintain a vehicle through a collaborative innovation that is designed to take the hassle out of maintaining a vehicle.

"We help customers easily renew a licence disc, track progress on renewal, have the disc delivered straight to their door, and receive free reminders for the next renewal."

The vehicle licence renewal service is part of a comprehensive range of solutions available for FNB customers in its broader nav Car offering, says Duvenage.

She added:

This includes helping customers get free vehicle value estimates, pay traffic fines, protect, or insure their vehicles against theft, scratches, or dents, and take up an extended warranty to minimise the cost of mechanical repairs.

Customers can also place their vehicle on the market or find a used car in the Marketplace, connecting buyers with vetted sellers, while finance is arranged through WesBank.

FNB says there are 6 000 active vehicles from WesBank-approved dealers and private sellers listed on the nav» Marketplace with more than one million searches to date.

"We aim to provide customers with the tools they need to navigate life," Duvenage adds.

"Commendably, it has reduced licence renewal time to 10 minutes, saving around 24 million hours across 240 000 licence renewals done via the app."

It's important to note you can also renew your vehicle licence via the Natis Online Service (also for R99 including delivery), or the post office.

Alternatively, and my choice every time, is to visit your nearest municipality or vehicle licence renewal centre - and not pay anything extra.

The trick is to know your centre's operating hours - and most are now open on Saturdays.

I prefer going as soon as they are open at 08:00, and I am in and out in less than five minutes.
